About Sifu Rieta
Sifu Vernon (Wong Kung) Rieta began his kung-fu training as a young boy growing up in Hawaii. He started with Jing Mo Association (Chinese Physical Culture Club). His first Sifu was Sifu Lau, who taught Southern Style Five Family Kung-fu (Mok gar, Fut Gar, Choy Gar, Hung Gar and Lau Gar). He also trained under Sifu T.Y. Pang (Pa Kwa) and Kai Ying Tung (Tai Chi). Sifu Rieta also studied Ng style Tai Chi, Arnis, Muay Thai and Zen Archery. He received his Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut kung fu from Buck Sam Kong (pictured below, right), who brought the two styles together. Buck’s Hung Gar comes directly from Si Gung Lam Jo (pictured below, left). Si Gung acquired the art from Lam Sai Wing, chief student of the famous boxer Wong Fei Hung, who learned the art from the equally renowned Wong Kei Ying. Si Gung learned his Choy Li Fut from his good friend (and equally accomplished martial artist) Li Koon Hung.
Sifu Rieta came to the mainland over 25 years ago and opened a school in Hollywood, CA where he taught. In addition to teaching, Sifu Rieta has worked in the film industry for many years as an actor and a stunt man. In fact, he has appeared in over 60 movies and TV productions, including Big Trouble in Little China, Rambo, Lethal Weapon 4, and TV’s The Highlander He has also trained as an artist and has worked behind the camera producing documentary films.
He has also assembled educational videos detailing characteristic Hung Gar forms and has been featured in all the major martial arts publications.
